Privacy Policy

The short version
This site is a collection of static pages. It has no login, no comment system, no newsletter signup, and no shopping cart. Nothing here asks you for personal information. The one thing running in the background is a cookie-free page-view counter, described below.
What this site collects directly
This site sets no cookies of its own, has no login, and stores nothing that identifies you. Pages are plain HTML and CSS served as files.
Analytics
This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views. It is worth being specific about what that does and doesn't mean, because most analytics tools work differently:
- It sets no cookies and uses no localStorage.
- It does not fingerprint you. Cloudflare states that it does not identify individuals via IP address, User-Agent string, or any other data.
- It does not follow you to other websites. What is measured is page views on this site, not a profile that persists elsewhere.
- What I can see is aggregate: which pages were viewed, roughly where in the world visitors came from, and which browsers were used. I cannot see individual visitors.
I use it for one reason: to know which articles are actually useful to people, so I can write more of those. Cloudflare's handling of this data is governed byCloudflare's privacy policy.
If this changes — if a different analytics tool is added, for example — this page will be updated before the change goes live, and the date at the top will change with it.
Hosting
This site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like essentially all web hosts, Cloudflare processes standard technical information required to deliver a page to you, which can include your IP address, browser type, and the time of the request. This happens at the network level, before any of this site's own code runs, and is governed by Cloudflare's own privacy policy.
Advertising
This site does not currently display advertising. It is intended to carry advertising in the future, and this section describes what that will mean when it happens. It does not describe anything happening right now.
When advertising is enabled:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- Users may opt out of personalized advertising by visitingGoogle Ads Settings.
- Users may also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising ataboutads.info.
External links
Articles sometimes link to outside sources — dictionaries, government language institutes, published research. Those sites have their own privacy practices, and this policy does not cover them.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
Because this site does not collect or store personal information itself, there is no account to access, correct, or delete. If you have a question about this policy, you can reach me through thecontact page.
Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated if the site's practices change — most likely when advertising is enabled. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
